I got home one day from another interminable day at school, drama was in full swing and I had a show the next night, I was tired, and I had, for the past few days, been thinking pretty darn hard about an assignment handed out by the almighty evil one, Mr. Headlee. The assignment was simple and straightforward.
Write about dreams.
I had been thinking about a very old idea I'd been kicking around for a long time when Mr.Headlee handed this out. I knew the old wheeze about matter-antimatter annihilation, but what about time-antitime, and so on. When this came up, it...well...it inflamed my imagination to say the least.
I had bounced this idea of dream-reality annihilation around for the two days before, and I came home that night ready to write.
I think I should add at this juncture that I was under a a great deal of stress at this point in time, and was having massive personal problems.
So, anyway. I came home that night, finished my math and various other pieces of...work...I had to do, and then sat down in front of my computer to write it.
If this story had any sort of dedication at all, at least part of it would read:...and to Mr. Scott Joplin and the band Creed for their musical inspiration during the writing of this story...
I don't think I'll ever forget that time spent staring at the computer, no other lights in the room. It was just me, my computer, and a can of Dr. Pepper ®. And the words just poured out, almost unbidden.
It was fun.
In my personal opinion, this story should be read by two people, one male and one female, in a darkened room, with maybe only candles lighting the paper. The man should take the human perspective, and the woman the dreams. They probably need two years of practice, but performed in this manner, this would be one heck of a story.
This story, to me, is very ephemereal. It is a dream, in and of itself. It's quiet and secret and translucent and airy and...
I like it.
If and when you read this again, read it in a darkened room, just you and your computer/paper. Have strange, quiet, haunting music on in the background, and enjoy.
And then see what comes of your dreams.
